Exploring estuaries, backwaters & bushcraft

The River Taw and River Torridge have such beautiful scenery and a huge amount of birdlife with the odd Otter spotting too!

These two rivers give you a unique view of Barnstaple, Bideford and the towns surrounding rural landscapes.

A popular trip is to launch at Fremington Quay, but prior to launching, you can enjoy a cream tea on the estuary beach and I will teach you how to light a beach fire using the traditional flint and steel method, once the fire has been successfully lit, marshmallows can be toasted. This is great for all ages but the kids particularly love it!

Once the tide picks up, we will launch the boats and go with the tide into Barnstaple and take in the old market town from the water, it is quite a different view to just driving or walking through it! Here we can either paddle on up to the rural fields or explore a back water in town depending on the time and how you are feeling.

Another popular trip is to launch at Barnstaple and take the tide upstream, taking in all the rural landscape after paddling through the town, the river snakes its way around and passes through cow fields, also home to Canadian geese, and passing behind the picturesque village of Bishops Tawton. There is a backwater to explore here too, the return of the trip is to turn around and return with the outgoing tide, taking in everything from a different perspective. This trip enjoys a cream tea on the grassy banks of the river, but doesn’t include the bushcraft element due to this being an inland river without beaches.
